Saturday's Seller: Wood Mosaics

This week's Saturday Seller here on The Steamer Trunk is one of my personal favorites to be found on Etsy. Robin Tucker and his wife, Kathy, of Wood Mosaics live the life many of us in today's economy may be dreaming of.

Electing to live a more self-sustaining lifestyle on their farm in Spickard,Missouri, they have a windmill to hand pump their own water, and they slaughter their own meat from the goats and chickens they raise. However, the one amenity they can't live without now is the internet. For many years the Tuckers set up shop at various craft shows and malls, but now prefer to stay home on the farm and sell their items via the internet. Social networking is done via their Myspace and flickr sites, with a back-up generator in case the electricity goes out.

Many of the items you will find at Wood Mosaics are influenced by Amish quilt patterns. Robin's excellent woodworking skills, both by hand and with a Foot-powered Table Saw, uses exotic natural woods that range from Satinwood from Sri Lanka to Purpleheart from Central and South America. All of the wood is completely natural, with only a clear finish added to enhance the beauty of the wood's innate color.

At Wood Mosaics you will find a wide variety of items, including various size Boxes, Lazy Susans, Game Boards, Humidors, and Tables, as well as smaller Quilt Blocks. Each item is beautifully created with unique variations of color and pattern. With Mother's Day and Father's Day quickly approaching, take a moment and browse through Wood Mosaics for a gift item truly destined to become tomorrow's heirloom!

What is The Steamer Trunk?

You may be asking "What exactly is The Steamer Trunk"? Essentially, The Steamer Trunk has been created as a co-op advertising initiative to promote artisans from all backgrounds who have a sincere talent and desire to keep the past alive through their artistic creations. Symbolically, The Steamer Trunk represents tomorrow's heirlooms.

At the height of the immigration period during the early 1900's, people from all walks of life left their homes to embark on a journey full of hope and promise. Often these people packed very little and perhaps only a handful of their most cherished possessions: a lace doily, an embroidered hankerchief, a quilt made by a family member, or a locket given for a special occasion. These cherished items became their family heirlooms and were passed down from one generation to the next. In today's world of high tech gadgets and disposable items, we often overlook the value of handmade items.

Here at The Steamer Trunk, we are making it our mission to provide shoppers with their next family heirloom. Each week we will be featuring artisans and their unique hand-made items that are destined to become a family heirloom. Whether you're looking for wedding, birthday, or holiday gifts, or just something to enhance your home decor, stop by The Steamer Trunk and consider what these talented artisans have to offer. Don't just give a gift...give a gift destined to become a family heirloom!
